Is strength training necessary for weight loss?

Question by FunkyGurl: Is strength training necessary for weight loss?
I’m 5’7 and weigh about 155lbs, trying to get down to 135 lbs, I know thats not thin but I just want to get healthy. Currently I am doing cardio for 1 hour about 6 imes a week, but I was wondering whether strength training is necessary for weight loss too.

If yes, what kind of regime should I follow? (weights, exercises?)

Also, should the strength training be done before or after cardio?

Thanks!

I don’t have the knowledge to answer your question, but I will say something which many people overlook; that is muscle weighs almost three times as much as fat, so building muscle can make it seem like you’re burning less fat than you actually are.

10 Tips to Avoid Catastrophic Strength Training Injuries

(PRWEB) November 6, 2004

According to Dan Huff, New Jersey-based strength and conditioning professional, most weight room accidents can be easily avoided. With the tragic death of a Florida teen (http://prepsports.tbo.com/prepsports/MGBNXOBH11E.html) during a strength training session it is important to learn how to use a weight room safely.

Dan is available to share with you his simple, yet effective tips for improving strength training safety including:

-Never Train Alone

-Always have a competent spotter that understands the exercise being performed

-Know your limitations

-Know the limitations of those training with you

-Begin each training session with a proper warm up

-Eat an energy rich meal 1 to 2 hours prior to training

-Keep your weight room organized so that there is room to maneuver

-Do not perform exercises that are too advanced for your level

-Always listen to the weight room supervisor (trainer, coach, strength and conditioning coordinator, etc.)

-Know the location of emergency equipment (AED, First Aid kit, fire extinguisher) and the nearest phone to call for help.
